What Is a Doula?


According to DONA International, a birth doula is a “trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and just after birth.” A doula’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Doulas do not replace fathers, friends, or family members as support people; they coach the mother’s labor support team to provide comfort measures that they would probably not know about otherwise. Doulas attend all types of births, including natural, medicated, and cesareans. Doulas are not natural birth advocates; they are advocates for the mother having a positive and empowering birth experience as the mother defines it.
